PHOTOGAME – PAINTING WITH LIGHT Partnership: FOTOADRENALINA Location: Prado (Meadow) SAT and SUN: 10:00-13:00 and 15:00-18:00 Have you ever thought about painting with light? The project PhotoGame proposes to the visitors to Autumn Festival to use coloured lanterns to write or draw pictures during the day, in the setting of Serralves Farm. The end result will be a portrait of you, your friends or your family, using this new photographic technique! TÓ TRIPS & JOÃO DOCE Location: Prado (Meadow) SAT: 18:00 In a live performance, as part of its nationwide tour with their new album "Guitar Makaka”, Tó Trips invites us to listen, and builds an intimate and exciting show with the well-known Angolan percussionist João Doce. The music knows how to transform isolation into a fortress and use independence to enable us to give our best. LAVOISIER Location: Prado (Meadow) SAT: 11:45 SUN: 15:00 JULINHO DA CONCERTINA Location: Prado (Meadow) SUN: 18:00 Julinho da Concertina came to Portugal in 1972 as a result of Marcelo Caetano’s policies to bring workers from the "overseas provinces" to conduct demanding industrial jobs. Julinho was born in Piloncan, Island of Santiago, in Cape Verde in 1951, and from the age of 5, when he moved to Portugal, he played the concertina (gaita in Cape Verde) every day. In the colonial era, the concertina was heavily censored by the law and the church, and the funaná was repressed by force. It was portrayed as a basic, malevolent and bohemian form of music. Julinho worked in a coal factory in the Lisbon area for over 30 years, but played the concertina every day. Today, alongside Katuta Branca and Bitori Nha Bibinha, he is the biggest legend of live funaná music, and is seen as the most technically skilled and virtuous player, wherein he changes the concertina himself to play "its" sound. The funaná, which began only with the concertina and an iron rod (an iron bed support played with a butter knife), subsequently accompanied on the bass and drums, which gave it a new dimension. This is the line-up of the band which is coming to Serralves. The funaná offers a rhythm of liberation, that was feared by the colonial authorities not because of its revolutionary lyrics (which the music didn’t have), but because of its power to free the mind and produce the sensation, even for moments, of complete freedom. The album of Julinho da Concertina will be released this year by Celeste/Mariposa Discos. TWO HOUSES BY RITA CASTRO NEVES WITH THE EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATION OF MATILDE SEABRA/TALKIE-WALKIE Location: Installation: 10:00-19:00 Workshops: SAT: 15:00-17:00 SUN: 15:00-19:00 WORKSHOP A SECRET-SIZED POCKET This installation is based on two archetypical "houses" with a simple design: a large and a small house. The "houses", with a simple wooden structure, are covered with fabric –made, built, from sewing together various items of used clothing: shirts, t-shirts, pants, socks, scarves ... A simple and affective shelter, these "houses" are a metaphorical representation of the possibility of merging everyone (by reference to all people who actually use all the items of used clothes) and everything (the moments and the stories that were experienced with these clothes, the memories that they trigger in their owners). In the classic dichotomy of History, this house well built, with the clothes worn by various people, it is is both a "monument" and a "document" - but a limited history. The neighbourhood relationship of proximity between the two houses suggests a sense of intimacy in separation: two distinct but nearby bodies: geographically, constructively, essentially. For this Autumn Festival we invite everyone to bring a little secret from their own home, or their own life, to the two shelters. In a tailormade pocket, the secret will be even more hidden and comfortable in these walls. ABÍLIO THE BEEKEEPER, BY GRAEME PULLEYN, LUÍS BELO & RICARDO AUGUSTO Location: Passeio da Levada SAT: 15:00 SUN: 12:30 Abilio the Beekeeper tells the story of a man of retirement age who unexpectedly finds himself alone. After months spent wandering aimlessly, he frees himself from loneliness and depression, embarking on an unusual adventure involving bee-keeping on the top of his building, in the middle of an anonymous city. The fight against his irritating neighbours, fat rats and inspectors from the Directorate General of Food and Veterinary Services, is a long and hard test of resilience and determination of this apprentice beekeeper. When it becomes evident that the bees cannot produce honey due to lack of food, Abilio launches a campaign to create urban gardens, mobilizing the school children from his neighbourhood (who he previously hated) and a group of unlikely clandestine gardeners. Thanks to his efforts, the city that used to be painted in shades of grey, little by little, is gaining colour and the scent of flowers. The joy of pollen. The taste of honey. But the greatest achievement of all takes place as a result of the delivery of the first jar of honey to a female neighbour who, miraculously, changes from being irritating to becoming very affectionate ... Abilio, the Bee Keeper is a parable that seeks to raise many questions about the current priorities of so-called developed societies and the sustainability of our collective life. Loneliness, abandonment, the failure of social structures, protection of the food chain, the relationship between man and nature and intelligent urbanisation are some of the central themes in a narrative that conceals various layers of meaning beneath a seemingly simple surface. Above all, this stage play is about life’s unexpected and inevitable ups and downs. The play enables us to celebrate people’s capacity to constantly reinvent themselves and become a warrior in the battle for their own happiness. Original Idea: Graeme Pulleyn Collective work: Graeme Pulleyn, Luís Belo and Ricardo Augusto Original Music: Ricardo Augusto Set Design and Images: Luís Belo Actors:Graeme Pulleyn, Luís Belo and Ricardo Augusto Technical consultants: Emanuel Lopes Institutional Partner: Beira Alta Beekeepers Association Project supported by Viseu Municipal Council, in the framework of the programme, Viseu Terceiro Support: Teatro Viriato Executive Production: Nicho Cultural Association DAMA PÉ DE MIM ANA MADUREIRA A commission by the Pedagogical Project of the Comédias do Minho Location: Clareira da Presa SAT: 11:00 SUN: 11:00 and 17:00 Duration: 40 minutes Tired of looking at her own navel, Dama Pé de Mim mounts her horse and sets off in search of a friend. Amalia, a suitcase that once was a crocodile, meets Nuno, a cloud fallen from the sky, which plunges into the deep river. But it’s only when she reaches the supermarket, that she finds out what it means to have a friend. With the help of Mr. Rodrigo. Dama Pé de Mim plays with our imagination and then reality takes place in a simple way. Using a bass guitar she creates a musical horse, she transforms a tulle skirt into a river, a mountain is changed into waste, a cardboard box produces a grouchy man. The audience, her accomplice, accompanies her light ... and free thinking. Her castle, once lonely and yellow, is finally populated by beings brimming with life, history, colour and good humour. Creation and performance: Ana Madureira Musical co-creation: Vahan Kerovpyan Creative support: Vahan Kerovpyan and Blaise Powell Musical design: Nuno Guedes Lighting design: Vasco Ferreira A FAMILY IS A FAMILY BY JOANA PROVIDÊNCIA Location: Prado (Meadow) SAT: 16:00 SUN: 11:45 and 16:00 And what if someone enters our house with their head in the clouds, a series of questions immediately arises: after all ... what is a family? In what family pocket ... can we fit our friends? And do the trees ... have a family? And a family of numbers ... how many are at the table? And what colour is the wool ... from the black sheep of the family? And the cat's meow ... does it sound familiar? Every family has a story to tell. And every story has a family of stories to discover. Text: Eugénio Roda Stage director: Joana Providência Assistant stage director: Anabela Sousa Composers/Musicians: Sofia Nereida Pinto and Tiago Oliveira Cast: Catarina Gomes, Mafalda Pinto Correia and Tiago Jácome Art Direction: Lola Sousa and Susete Rebelo Lighting Design: Pedro Vieira de Carvalho Sound coordination: Fábio Ferreira Props and Assistant Set Design: Filipe Mendes and Rosana Amorim Wardrobe: Glória Costa Wardrobe support: Cristina Ferreira Support for Art Direction: Maria Nogueira Graphic Design: Bernardo Providência Line Production: Glória Cheio Portugal’s forty seven indigenous breeds are the result of a millennial process, involving a high degree of adaptation to environmental conditions, sometimes extreme, thereby enabling the animals to make efficient use of available resources. These breeds, part of Portugal’s historical and cultural heritage, contribute to the maintenance of sustainable production systems in perfect harmony with the ecosystem. Their association to traditional quality products engenders potential for economic growth, playing a major role in terms of ensuring that local populations continue to live in rural areas. ANIMALS OF THE FARM Coordination: Eliana Barbosa SAT and SUN: 11:00-12:30, 14:00-15:30 and 16:00-17:30 Location: Stables This activity promotes direct contact with domestic animals from different Portuguese indigenous breeds existing in Serralves Farm. An opportunity to see firsthand and understand the importance of these animals for humans, and some of their habits and customs. THE BORDALEIRA DE ENTRE DOURO E MINHO BREED Coordination: AMIBA (ASSOCIATION OF BREEDERS OF BARROSÃ LIVESTOCK) SAT and SUN: 10:00-13:00; 15:00-19:00 Location: Picadeiro (Riding Area) In order to disseminate and promote the Bordaleira de Entre Douro e Minho breed, we invite the general public to visit the Picadeiro (Riding Area) of Serralves Farm and come into contact with some animals from this breed. Everyone will be able to learn more about the advantages of indigenous breeds as compared to exotic breeds and learn about their specific characteristics. AMIBA, the Association of Breeders of Barrosã Livestock, is the entity responsible for the programme of conservation and improvement of Bordaleira de Entre Douro e Minho livestock - a native breed of Portuguese sheep considered to be in marked decline. The presence of this sheep breed aims to raise awareness about the national genetic heritage and disclose the work conducted by AMIBA, which besides this indigenous breed, represents the cattle breed of Barrosã, the sheep breed Churra do Minho and the four indigenous poultry breeds existing in Portugal: White, Yellow, Black Lusitanian and Portuguese Pedrês. THE MIRANDA DONKEY Coordination: AEPGA (ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY AND PROTECTION OF DONKEYS) SAT and SUN: 10:30, 11:30, 12:30; 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30 Location: Passeio da Levada Duration: 30 minutes Max. no. of participants: 16 In this activity everyone will become fascinated by the Miranda donkey and understand its social, cultural, economic and ecological importance. For many years the Miranda Donkey had tremendous value and usefulness in terms of support for agricultural work and for transportation. Currently, its utility in these areas has decreased with advancing agricultural mechanization, rural depopulation and the abandonment of traditional agricultural practices. However, this indigenous breed has a unique genetic, ecological and cultural heritage in our country. GARRANO PONIES OF GERÊS Coordination: PORTO AND MATOSINHOS EQUESTRIAN CENTRE SAT and SUN: 10:00-13:00; 15:00-19:00 Location: Picadeiro (Riding Area) The Garrano pony is the oldest Portuguese breed. It’s a protected breed, due to the threat of extinction that it has faced over recent years. This activity promotes contact with the Garrano horse, used in riding, a sport, classified as a therapy in some contexts and as an art for many people, and explores the benefits of riding this pony. SAVOIR-FAIRE IN SERRALVES Design and coordination: Alice Bernardo SAVOIR-FAIRE IN SERRALVES offers a journey through the singularities of Manufacturing, providing background knowledge concerning the production techniques and processing of textile fibres, in the light of current concerns. This year the emphasis will be placed on Portuguese wools through exhibition of the different types of wool produced by indigenous sheep breeds and a series of demonstrations and practical workshops, through which we can learn about the various transformation processes involving this raw material – from raw wool to weaving, also including spinning, dyeing and felting. RESEARCHERS’ CORNER Location: Prado (Meadow) Duration: 45 minutes Max. no. of participants: groups with a maximum of 25 participants In the framework of a partnership between the Serralves Foundation and CIBIO-InBIO (Research centre in biodiversity and genetic resources, associate laboratory), visitors can explore the «Researchers’ Corner», showcasing various projects from this research centre. Guided by specialist researchers they will then embark upon a series of walks to discover the fauna and flora of Serralves Park. SATURDAY THE AMPHIBIANS OF SERRALVES Coordination: Raquel Ribeiro Operating time: 11:00 There are 17 species of amphibians in Portugal. Amphibians are in a very delicate situation in terms of conservation: one in three amphibian species in the world have a worrying conservation status. In Serralves Park there are four different species of amphibians: green-frog; Bosca's newt; common-midwife-toad and yellow-spotted salamander. DISCOVERY OF THE LICHENS OF SERRALVES Coordination: Joana Marques Operating time: 15:00 Lichens are beings that result from the symbiosis between a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. They can take different forms and sizes, and colonize a wide array of different habitats, such as tree trunks or rocks. The approximately 19,000 species currently known worldwide attest to the success of this union. Given that some species are highly sensitive to pollution, they are often used as bioindicators of air quality. DEMONSTRATION OF TECHNIQUES USED IN THE STUDY OF MICROMAMMALS Coordination: Joana Paupério Operating time:16:00 Although they are often regarded as pests and carriers of disease, micromammals actually play a key role in the balance of ecosystems. In addition to serving as the basis of the diet of many species of carnivorous mammals, birds of prey and reptiles, they are also seed dispersers and predators of a high quantity and diversity of invertebrates. At least three species can be observed in Serralves Park: the Algerian mouse, house mouse and the greater white-toothed shrew. We will learn the techniques used in the study of this group of animals. DISCOVERING THE TREES AND SHRUBS OF SERRALVES Coordination: Sofia Viegas Operating time: 17:00 Serralves Park is renowned for its diversity of tree and shrub heritage, composed of more than 8000 species. We can find native species such as holly, white alder or Alvariño oak, and exotic species such as the tulip tree, liquid amber and American oak. These are just a few of the approximately 230 species and varieties that exist here. SUNDAY THE REPTILES OF SERRALVES Coordination: Raquel Ribeiro Operating time: 11:00 Reptiles are perhaps the world’s most misunderstood animals, largely due to ignorance of their biology and ecology. Most of the species found in Portugal are completely harmless and all try to flee whenever they feel threatened. Their elusive and low profile enables them to go undetected, making it difficult to observe them. There are at least two species of reptiles in Serralves Park: Bocage's wall lizard and the slow worm. AUTUMN INSECTS IN SERRALVES Coordination: José Manuel Grosso-Silva Operating time:15:00 Insects - arthropods with three pairs of legs and a body divided into three segments - represent about 90% of all known species. Herbivores, predators, pollinators and decomposers, they are key elements for the balance of ecosystems. They are also the principal food source for many other animal groups, such as amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. DEMONSTRATION OF THE TECHNIQUES USED IN THE STUDY OF BATS Coordination: Vanessa Mata Operating time: 17:00 Bats are mysterious beings for most people, especially because of their nocturnal habits. They are capable of moving in the dark, using an ultrasonic echo system. The species found in Portugal feed mainly on insects, and thereby help control insect populations. They face serious conservation problems associated to the loss and alteration of their habitats. Serralves Park provides shelter and/or food for at least two species of bats: the common pipistrelle and the serotinine bat. We will learn more about this group of animals and the techniques used in their study. Activities for all ages, without prior booking, subject to the maximum number of participants at any time, within the operating hours. Location: Prado (Meadow) and Celeiro (Barn) Operating time: 10:00-19:00 SATURDAY AROUND THE STRAW Coordination: Catavento, Lda. In this workshop, straw is the queen of creations. Together with our family, we’ll use it to invent whatever our imagination conjures up: toy-dolls inspired by the Farm’s animals and the garden, characters in a story ... A journey to the world of creativity with natural materials in a traditional festival environment. OVERCOME THE SHEET Coordination: Andreia Coutinho, Magda Silva, Melissa Rodrigues, Rita Faustino Rotate, turn and looks at colours and shapes that multiply! Big kaleidoscopes, stencils and drawings, imaginary maps and utopian landscapes: from the sheet in a drawing and a drawing in a sheet we will travel and create new worlds. From tree to tree, we will travel around the world! INSECTORIUM Coordination: Anabela Pereira, Dina Marques What are the pollinating insects that inhabit our gardens? Why are they so useful in nature and why do they need our help? We will learn about them and understand their extraordinary role in helping plants in the production of a wide range of the different fruits and seeds that we eat. How can we help them and attract more of these joyful friends to our flower beds and vegetable gardens? MY BODY IS A TREE Coordination: André Rodrigues, Rita Roque On the basis of the relationship and differences between animals and plants we will create possibilities for new bodies: body-tree, body-landscape ... Viewing the body as landscape will allow us to cross human elements with vegetal elements. In a surrealist exercise, we will mix together two different worlds, but that closely interact and thus understand how two bodies can present similarities, in such a complex biodiversity. PAINTINGS IN THE FARM Coordination: Ana Martins, Ilda Sousa Outdoors and using easels, we will paint with coloured paints and make drawings with real and imaginary shapes. You can imitate what you see around you, create scribbles with scratches or even smudges, anything goes to portray the arrival of autumn on paper! SUNDAY AROUND THE STRAW Coordination: Catavento, Lda. In this workshop, straw is the queen of creations. From tree to tree, we will go around the world! EXPLORE BIODIVERSITY Coordination: Mundo Científico, Lda. Serralves Park is home to many living things in its gardens, flower beds, water points and the Vegetable garden, vital for its ecological balance. Pollinating bees, scavenging worms, predator ladybirds, will be the subject of our attention to understand the ecological functions of the different animal groups found in this Park. NATURAL FIBRES Coordination: Mundo Científico, Lda. Fibres are currently associated with all human activities. We will discover various different fibres that are traditionally used in garments, test some of their properties and try out natural ways of dyeing, using organic materials and minerals. AUTUMNAL IMPRESSIONS Coordination: Cristina Camargo, Joana Nascimento, Mariana Assunção, Sofia Santos The basics of taking pictures with a camera obscura will inspire us to register Autumnal impressions from Serralves Park. These impressions will reverse themselves, duplicate themselves, transfer and cover themselves with the colours of autumn! MICROWORLDS Coordination: Mundo Científico, Lda. In a microworld everything is virtually invisible to our eyes. We will expand and unravel the life forms that intertwine in the soil, water, in small logs or in the gaps between stones. We observe nutrient-fixing bacteria, anti-bacterial plant extracts, fungal decomposers of organic waste and spores responsible for the smell of the earth. THE WIND IS THE AIR IN MOVEMENT Coordination: Paulo Jesus, Raquel Correia, Raquel Sambade, Sónia Borges What is the wind? The wind is the air in movement. This Autumn Festival we want to celebrate the wind. Each participant will contribute with a colourful fan customised to their needs so that we can all be part of a large installation! EARTH WORKSHOP Coordination: Mundo Científico, Lda. In the Earth workshop we will analyse the properties of aromatic, medicinal and culinary plants, that exist in many Portuguese gardens and vegetable gardens. From the spice route to the trails of cosmetics, many sources will serve as stimuli for the senses. Let's extract aromas, produce dermatological clays or natural toothpaste. FLAVOURS ROUTE Co-ordination: Mundo Científico, Lda. In an invitation to the palate, we will experience old flavours with new habits: sprouted and fermented, dehydrated and processed, or simply cooked. We will prepare many Autumn snacks for the festival. Who will taste them? PAINTINGS IN THE FARM Coordination: Ana Martins, Ilda Sousa Outdoors and using easels, we will paint with coloured paints and make drawings with real and imaginary shapes. Co-ordination: Mundo Científico AUTUMN FLAVOURS Autumn brings different flavours, sounds and colours that blend on the palate. Apple ravioli, fresh cheese sweetened with honey, or pumpkin lollipops sprinkled with spices will highlight the protagonists of the true Autumn festival in the Park. Co-ordination: Mundo Científico SCIENTIST OF THE SEASONS The seasons of the year are an invitation to awaken the senses. How do we perceive the passage of time? The cool nights, shorter days, changing colours in the landscape, the progressive slowing of the whirlwind of life in the Park. Let's take a leap into the universe and simulate how the earth moves during the year. Will we thereby be able to discover why the seasons, equinoxes and solstices occur? Or why the leaves start to reveal hidden colours when the days grow shorter? Are you ready for a planetary adventure? Co-ordination: Mundo Científico PLANTING AND WORMING ("MINHOCAR") What will happen if we mix together earth, plants, worms and bits of food in a special vase? We’ll discover how to set up a miniature ecosystem in a vase and learn what keeps it in balance. What tricks can we use to save water and maintain the fertility of the soil? What plants can we cultivate? We will also get to know red worms Eisenia foetida and learn incredible things about these living beings - what they are like, what they eat and how they work. Co-ordination: Dina Marques, José Pedro Fernandes, Anabela Pereira, Marco Ramos BRANCHES, BUGS AND BALLS OF THREAD In this Autumn let’s set our hands free to build figures with organic materials – woollen threads, linens, silks and other materials from Serralves Park. Tying, wrapping, binding, making small knots, to invent and create new imaginary worlds. Co-ordination: Cristina Camargo, Joana Nascimento, Sofia Santos BETWEEN THE LINES What do a spindle, silkworm, shuttle, sheep and spinning wheel all have in common? We’ll create a joint installation in "Between the Lines”, as if it were a cocoon, which intersects natural and ancestral movements as we help build an enormous structure. Finally, a fabric is woven line-by-line … as the silkworm used to say! Co-ordination: Andreia Coutinho, Magda Silva, Rita Faustino, Ana Vieira WE’RE SCREWED! We will create an installation, adding, accumulating and complicating a plot that will invade the entire space. This will generate the density of lines requires to constrain the movement of the body, snaking within this labyrinthine place. We're screwed! Co-ordination: Paulo Jesus, Raquel Correia, Raquel Sambade e Sónia Borges AUTUMN PAINTINGS With our easels in the open air, we’ll paint with coloured paint and make drawings with real and imaginary forms. You can imitate what you see around you, creating doodles with scratches or even using smudges, but we’ll all mark the arrival of Autumn on paper! AROUND THE STRAW In this workshop, straw is the queen of creations. Together with our family, we’ll use it to invent whatever our imagination conjures up: toy-dolls inspired by the Farm’s animals and the garden, characters in a story ... A journey to the world of creativity with natural materials in a traditional festival environment Co-ordination: Ana Martins and Carlos Carvalho RESEARCHERS’ CORNER In the framework of a partnership between the Serralves Foundation and CIBIO, visitors can explore the «Researchers’ Corner» showcasing various projects from this research centre. In the North, I have been familiar with these stories since I was a child. This is the story of a black well which they say hides a treasure that was buried by an enchanted Moorish maiden under a spell... At night she weeps, as she combs her hair, but during the day she is transformed into an animal that chases the water carrier, on his way to the well where he goes to get water... This is the start of an extraordinary tale. At night when I walk through the streets I recall that every nook hides a legend, hides a mystery and reveals a bit about ourselves - about our identity and culture. Duration: 45 minutes Location: Passeio da Levada Operating times: 12:00, 14:15 and 17:00 Cebeça [Head] Filho da Mãe "I remember when I was a boy, watching my great-uncle playing the guitar. His nails were curved and stained yellow by cigarettes, and he had straight, white hair, slicked back against his head. There were not many questions, the world was a simple place. Indeed, what I saw wasn’t a man with grey hair, bending over, strumming. Instead it was something more evident, as I would later perceive: the guitar and the guitarist were part of the same music. But as we grow up the world becomes colder due to our need to dissect it, place it under a microscope and apply cubic equations. The world starts to acquire straight lines, becomes geometric, where even tears are governed by a sort of mathematics. Pythagoras stated - and his followers, such as his disciple in Croton repeated - that music and mathematics are the same thing. An octave corresponds precisely to 1/2 of the chord of a guitar; the third natural note is 1/3 of the chord; and the fifth natural note is 3/4. And this is only one small example of how the music we hear is based on mathematics, just as stones are made of music and our feelings are strictly geometric. This is how music may be understood using the power of reason. But, regrettably, we hear nothing, we feel nothing. To achieve this we require the body which, although it is a kind of ten-times-table, is still made of dirt and understands this language written with a shovel. Sometimes we need a "son of a gun”, who can place us once again in the childhood place, in that former space where the guitar and the guitarist are part of the same music. Melancholic, the son of a gun manages to put together memories, starting with a base which repeats itself, and which become increasingly complex, such as birds when they sing. The rhythms intersect, above and below, like boats riding the storm, causing everything to become jumbled up - bones with skin, the inside with the outside, thirst with wine. It's not just playing. It's digging out the sounds and coaxing them out of the guitar. And the music, with its cathartic power, awakens us. No other art form can make us move, shake and dance like music. For that reasons, trumpets will be needed on Judgement day - to awaken the dead. Or, if we are less orthodox - guitars. A Rembrandt painting does not penetrate bones. It reaches many places, but it does not make us dance, or tap our feet. If there is one thing that can make us stand and dance, exulted, at a moment's notice, it’s music. It opens up a path through our veins and muscles. It’s made of flesh and speaks this language. The entire universe moves because of the music of the spheres, because of the chords that God played in the Beginning, bent over, strumming a guitar. Everything moves because of a son of a gun. "Catching” the people who leave for work early in the morning and do the same thing in reverse at the end of the day, every day of the week. All those who live inside the city’s limits and enter and leave to work without ever enjoying the possibilities that a city offers. Interrupting this journey for two or three minutes. The subject is a "little theatre” where a performer and a spectator develop an intimate relationship over the course of these fleeting minutes. An oval iron object enveloped in acrylic and with two entrances for the head of a performer and a spectator. The bold colours make us look forward to a situation that is playful and recreational. The performance narrates this contrast between expectation and the story written by José Luis Peixoto. A short story with great power of drama and reflection about the public space. We made our debut at 7 a.m. in Cais de Sodré, in Lisbon. Thus, the first sessions were conducted at dawn, when thousands of people enter the city to work. The performance was widely accepted and was presented at various cultural centres (and thus no longer with the tension of being presented on the street). We feel it should continue to maintain the objective of interrupting passers-by for a few minutes, and we are thinking about doing something similar for children. Recently we held a workshop where each participant was confronted with this situation on the street, with a text he had written. Direction - Miguel Moreira Performers: Sandra Rosado and Miguel Moreira (premiere), Sophie Lesso, Raquel André, Carlos António, Félix Lozano, Sofia Pimentão, Catarina Requeijo, Vânia Rovisco, Diana Coelho, Catarina Felix Text - José Luís Peixoto Set Design - Jorge Moreira Built Object - Leonel and Bicho Operating times: to be defined Location: Prado (Meadow), Clareira da Presa, next to the Stables Micro globe The smallest theatre in the world Four hundred years ago, William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre was at its peak. Thousands of spectators, from all social strata in London, came to watch shows such as Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet or The Tempest. What few people know is that the Bard had a second theatre, much smaller than the London Globe, known as the Little Globe. This was really a travelling theatre, which went from fair to fair throughout England, but also throughout Europe. It had everything that the large Globe had, but on a smaller scale. It was a laboratory where Shakespeare tried out his latest creations before the general public in fairs and public squares. Through an exhaustive study of documents and artefacts, found all over the old continent, the team of the World's Smallest Theatre has reconstructed this small theatre, named the Micro Globe. The reconstruction of the Micro Globe is more than just the physical structure of the little theatre in a wagon. It includes reconstruction of some of the dozens of micro-shows presented in the 17th Century. Few people also know that Shakespeare, besides being the great poet of the stage, had an active love life. One of the reasons he travelled so much throughout the world was because of the contact it allowed him with ladies in the countries where he passed with his little theatre. Today it is an undisputed fact that William left descendants throughout the world. Another fact is that the five artists of this new 20th Century Micro Globe –including one Portuguese artist, one French artist, and one Italian artist - are all descendants (genealogically proven) from the great master of the English theatre. These descendants, following in the footsteps of their illustrious ancestor, invite us to enter the Micro Globe and delight in the small theatrical pearls that are presented for your enjoyment and in honour of the father of modern theatre, William Shakespeare. The instruments will be played mechanically using home-made mechanisms: some are structures made from Meccano parts and activated with electric motors. These will introduce a selection of musical works from the media library of the Quai Branly Museum in Paris. The show aims to record the instrument for each work as it is played in front of the listeners. One exception: the ancient West African horn will introduce a group from Uganda. With special thanks to the Musée du Quai Branly and Les Siestes Electroniques. Duration: 50 minutes Location: Prado Stage Operating times: 16:00 Afrobaile Celeste/Mariposa Celeste/Mariposa is a Lisbon-based collective (and a recent record label) represented on stage by Wilson Vilares and Francisco Sousa, who aims to display the tremendous musical heritage of the Official Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOPs), much of which has been recorded in Lisbon from the 1970s until today. Most of the music has a strong connection to Portuguese culture, but for political reasons has been almost totally ignored until today by the Portuguese. With an internationally recognised collection of records from the PALOP countries, Celeste/Mariposa brings to Serralves its Afro-Baile (Afro-Dance), which has been affirmed in Lisbon as a growing cultural force, but also abroad, with four European tours (two in 2015). Afro-baile is an unlimited celebration of the fantastic sonorities of the 5 PALOP countries - from Mozambique’s marrabenta to Guinea-Bissau’s gumbé, Cape Verde’s funaná, S. Tomé and Príncipe’s ocopé to Angola’s semba and rebita. As people say in Luanda: "There's no point stopping. Go for it!" A relaxed, fun and happy end of the Festival, to get all ages moving. Duration: 60 minutes Location: Prado Operating times: 18:00 Smaller production scales allow us to take advantage of local raw materials and human resources, stimulating the development of local economies. These, smaller and more close-knit economies, return control to the individual, encouraging entrepreneurship, collaborative relationships and reducing economic dependence on large-scale economic movements. Small and medium-scale productions are also those through which create high value-added products that can compete in the global market not on the basis of price, but through quality and differentiation. Two practical workshops, based on free experimentation, guided by professionals with vast experience in the field, will address these issues on the basis of practical case studies of wool and basket weaving, in order to make the information accessible, attractive and perceptible to all visitors. Design and co-ordination: Alice Bernardo Trying out Textiles The visitor can discover, test and learn about the processes that transform fibre into fabric - from spinning to weaving. The raw material used will be wool, since it is the most accessible learning material for the audience of the Autumn Festival (including small children, young people, adults and experienced users). We will have wool samples to see and touch, and then card and spin with a manual spindle (introduction to the technique of spinning with a suspension spindle and a Portuguese spindle), complemented by spinning with spinning wheels and weaving on various different looms (4 looms). In this year’s edition we can sell materials and therefore objects related to this topic will be available - raw materials, tools, more finished products, technical manuals. If anyone is interested in the activity that they have experienced/seen they can take their work home with them. Trying out Basket-weaving Each participant will be able to construct a wicker basket from start to finish, learning the basic techniques and using the proper tools and materials for this craft. Each basket maker will guide six people at a time, who will start and finish a basket, moving on to the next one only when the first one is finished. Portugal’s forty seven indigenous breeds are the result of a millennial process, involving a high degree of adaptation to environmental conditions, sometimes extreme, thereby enabling the animals to make efficient use of available resources. THE BARROSÃ BREED AMIBA (ASSOCIATION OF BREEDERS OF BARROSÃ LIVESTOCK) AMIBA, the Association of Breeders of Barrosã Livestock, is the entity responsible for the programme of conservation and improvement of Barrosã livestock - a native breed of Portuguese cattle considered an endangered species. The presence of this cattle breed aims to raise awareness about the national genetic heritage and disclose the work conducted by AMIBA, which besides this indigenous breed, represents the sheep breeds of Bordaleira from the Entre Douro and Minho region and Churra from the Minho region, and the four indigenous poultry breeds existing in Portugal: White, Yellow, Black Lusitanian and Portuguese Pedrês. In order to disseminate and promote the Barrosã breed, we invite the public to visit the Picadeiro (riding arena) of Serralves Farm, where they can come into contact with four Barrosã bovines - a bull, a cow with a calf, and a heifer - and obtain information regarding the advantages of indigenous breeds compared with exotic breeds, and also learn about their specificities. However, this indigenous breed has a unique genetic, ecological and cultural heritage in our country. The goal of this activity is to encourage as many people as possible to become fascinated by Donkeys and understand their social, cultural, economic and ecological importance. The Park’s fauna and flora are shown in a vast and unexplored universe. This other hidden world that surrounds us will foster the admiration and amazement of the general public. This exhibition provides visitors with an additional reason for extended enjoyment of the unique space of Serralves Park, which since 2012 has been listed as a National Monument, and was recently recognized in the publication The Gardener's Garden (Phaidon) as one of the world’s 250 most remarkable gardens. The exhibition will once again include the winning images from the public completion to capture each person’s "own" Park in macro. Curator: João Almeida «Stories» I’M 25 YEARS OLD (2014 - 1015) INTER-GENERATIONAL PROJECT This is the fourth year running of the intergenerational project "I'm 25 years old" - the result of a partnership between the Porto Municipal Council and the Serralves Foundation. This edition of the project involved the senior citizens of the Bom Pastor Day Centre (Cruz Vermelha) and young people from the António Cândido Centre. It’s based on the assumption that interaction between different generations is a critical factor in achieving health and balance for all ages and that well-being is constantly being built with a key role assumed by playfulness and creativity. The project once again revolves around a role play game that is located in an imaginary "here" and "now", where everyone behaves like 25 year old adults. The topic - Stories – refers to the idea that we are all narratives under construction, the real-life and fictional stories that we’re told and tell, create and/or recreate. We learn, grow and renew ourselves with them. We use them to build our own identity, that of others and the world in which we live. Kimi Djabaté A songwriter, vocalist, African xylophone player, guitarist and crucial ambassador of Mandinka and Guinean culture in Portugal and abroad, Kimi Djabaté – we can safely state - is today one of the great stage performers living in Portugal, which also became his home for more than a decade. He develops his songs with a deep sense of craft, working with the accuracy and painstaking care of serious and serene masters. He was born into a family of musicians, with a centuries-old tradition, that moved to Guinea Bissau over two centuries ago. His experimental, social and cultural approach is to address contemporary and topical issues and find resolutions in the form of his music. He observes the world through the orality of music, which is something that is inevitably contemporary and is always duly enriched by the long tradition in making this music. Tales about morality, ethics, citizenship, honesty, love, family and the great existential questions. An African xylophone solo and vocals. Schedule: 12h00 Location: Prado Milaneza Sopa de Pedra A female vocal group dedicated to capella singing of traditional songs. The group was founded in Porto, in 2012, thanks to the restlessness of nine young female singers, who had various kinds of education and musical and artistic experiences. They aimed to perform traditional Portuguese music with artistic rigour, and sought to enliven its freshness through new harmonies and polyphonic arrangements that explore its complexity, richness and depth. Schedule: 16h00 Location: Prado Milaneza Target audience: Over 3 years old Dj Hirudroid Pedro Augusto The selection by the musician Pedro Augusto involves a large chronological period and musical fusion. Ranging from references to the great composers of "early electronics", to Portuguese music of the 1970s and 1980s, this performance reveals an effervescent and captivating dimension, enriched in real time, through the cacophonous manipulation of small gadgets, whistles and sound gags! A relaxed and fun end-of-party session, that will get people of all ages dancing. Vislumbre (Glimpse) is a performance in which we summarise some of these stories, like those of António, Emília, Manuela, Isabel ... Peoplethat I bumped into as I wandered aimlessly through the streets of various cities. The performance is also a symbiosis between music and a dance solo, in this case involving a piano played live, whose sounds accompany the stories and memories of an encounter with nature. Hidden in the walls, soil, trees, water - they are the true architects of the Park. The insects, birds, amphibians, bats, mice and reptiles, how many curiosities do they have to offer us? Let's open our senses to the questions and unravel the fascinating world of these ancient residents of Serralves. Co-ordination: Mundo Científico Schedule: 10:00-19:00 Location: Celeiro How many colours does the Autumn wear Autumn presents us with multicoloured palettes that announce the passing seasons. Where do so many colours hide in the leaves, only revealing themselves when the trees undress, preparing for the cold weather? Chlorophylls, carotenoids and anthocyanins, molecular artisans that are responsible for these small magic tricks. With a pinch of Science and an inspiring Park, let's find out how many colours the Autumn wears. Co-ordination: Mundo Científico Schedule: 10:00-19:00 Location: Prado Milaneza The inventor of clean energy In this inventions workshop, the challenge of producing energy from alternative resources becomes a real adventure: bottle-collectors, clay-fridges, solar cells emitting plant cells, lime batteries, water clocks or wind lamps, the bench is ready for you to start to experiment! Co-ordination: Mundo Científico Schedule: 10:00-19:00 Location: Prado Milaneza Cycles of nature The annual transformation of plants and animals marks the seasons in Serralves Park. Butterflies, beetles, frogs and toads, trees and small herbs tell us endless stories of metamorphoses, deciduous leaves, bulbs or corms. What’s the secret behind these biological clocks, that operate in each season of the year? Will it be cold? Will the sun shine? Let's makes some tests and learn about the Park’s biological rhythms. Co-ordination: Mundo Científico Schedule: 10:00-19:00 Location: Prado Milaneza Predicting the weather The arrival of Autumn brings us cooler nights and shorter days. The wind seems to become playful and reds, yellows and browns settle in the landscape. Let’s put on weathermen’s robes and gauge the weather. In this workshop we will invite participants to build anthropomorphic or zoomorphic figures (i.e. little men or animals) from the branches, twigs and leaves left over from pruning trees. After being duly prepared, this will be the raw material for these bodies that we’ll invent. Joints and articulations. Inspired by tools and utensils that have accompanied us for millennia, we’ll join these twigs together and get them to move. In the last part of the workshop, in order to invent and discover a bit more about these creatures of vegetal origin, we’ll start to move them around by hand. How do they move? How do they live? What do they want? Then, each new member of the Ramos family will start to live with its builder’s family. Schedule: In continuous operation from 10:00 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 17:30, with joint handling/presentation at 13:00 and 18:00 Location: Prado Milaneza "Honrar a sua vinha" ("Honouring your vineyard") Comédias do Minho, by Rui Mendonça and André Martins In 2012, the Comédias do Minho toured the Alvarinho Route in Monção and Melgaço. They had fun with love stories associated to producing wine. They danced in the landscape. They heard the sounds emitted by the territory. They ended up in restaurants, in an apocalyptic dinner - it was the end of the world. During the course of this experience, André Martins and Rui Mendonca spoke with wine producers, picked grapes, and bathed in the sun and rain. The story of these working days is told in a film that, like any good documentary, is still a beautiful fiction. The film that starts in this way, mixes up all these things: Alvarinho wine, the people who invented it, the territory which gave it its form and taste, or the manner in which we relate with nature. Can the collection of images and sounds provide the answers we’re looking for? (In Honrar a sua Vinha) Schedule: 11:00; 14:30 Duration: 63 minutes + conversation Target audience: Over 6 years old Location: Park’s training room In front of the camera Rui Mendonça Behind the camera André Martins Production Comédias do Minho / Fio Condutor Activity sponsored by Adriminho in the framework of the Decanted Stories Cooperation Project, presented within the framework of the Proder - Rural Development Programme. Manufacturing: Know How Smaller production scales allow us to take advantage of local raw materials and human resources, stimulating the development of local economies. These, smaller and more close-knit economies, return control to the individual, encouraging entrepreneurship, collaborative relationships and reducing economic dependence on large-scale economic movements. Two practical workshops, based on free experimentation, guided by professionals with vast experience in the field, will address these issues on the basis of practical case studies of wool and basket weaving, offering the public a first contact and learning some techniques of small-scale manufacturing. The workshop will cover practices such as spinning with a spindle and spinning wheel, weaving, various basket weaving techniques, and contact with different raw materials and tools used in the professional practice of each of these crafts will be covered. Schedule: 10:00-19:00 Location: Jardim Maria Nordman Conception and coordination: Alice Bernardo Co-ordination of textile practises: Guida Fonseca, Rosário Albuquerque and Tita Costa Co-ordination practise of basket weaving: Manuel and Rosa Oliveira Portugals’ forty seven indigenous breeds are the result of a millennial process, involving a high degree of adaptation to environmental conditions, sometimes extreme, thereby enabling the animals to make efficient use of available resources. Chickens of Portugal AMIBA, the Barrosã Breeders Association, is the entity responsible for the conservation and improvement programmes of the four existing indigenous breeds of chickens in Portugal: the White breed, Yellow breed, Lusitanian Black breed and the Portuguese Pedrês breed. These breeds are classified as being "highly endangered". The presence of these four indigenous chicken breeds, aims to raise awareness of the national genetic heritage and disseminate the work of the AMIBA Association of Breeders, that in addition to these indigenous breeds of poultry, also represents Barrosã cattle and the sheep breeds, Bordaleira from Entre Douro e Minho and Churra do Minho. In order to disseminate and promote these breeds, we invite the general public to visit the Picadeiro (riding arena) in Serralves Farm, where they can see specimens of the breeds and obtain information on the advantages of nurturing indigenous breeds in comparison with exotic breeds, as well as the locations where the animals may be acquired and their shelter and feeding requirements. Schedule: 10:00-13:00; 15:00-19:00 Location: Picadeiro Miranda Donkey AEPGA – the Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys in the Terras de Miranda During many years, the Miranda Donkey had tremendous value and usefulness in terms of support for agricultural work and for transportation. Currently, its utility in these areas has decreased with advancing agricultural mechanization, rural depopulation and the abandonment of traditional agricultural practices. However, this indigenous breed has a unique genetic, ecological and cultural heritage in our country. The goal of this activity is to encourage as many people as possible to become fascinated by Donkeys and understand their social, cultural, economic and ecological importance. Schedules: 10:30, 11:30, 12:30; 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30 Max. no. of participants: 16 Duration: 30 min Location: Passeio da Levada Garrano ponies of Gerês Porto and Matosinhos Equestrian Centre The Garrano pony is the oldest Portuguese breed. It’s a protected breed, due to the threat of extinction that it has faced over recent years. Several Garrano ponies will attend the Autumn Festival in order to promote horse riding with ponies in the Riding School of the Porto and Matosinhos Equestrian Centre. The goal is to disseminate the benefits of this activity - which combines sport, art and therapy. In partnership with the Serralves Foundation, the School promotes horseriding beginner courses, thus marking the return of this modality to the Farm during the summer vacation. Schedule: 10:00-13:00; 15:00-19:00 Location: Picadeiro I’M 25 YEARS OLD – INTER-GENERATIONAL PROJECT 2013/14 ENDLESS TRAVELS This is the third year running of the intergenerational project "I'm 25 years old" - the result of a partnership between the Municipality of Porto / Porto Social Foundation and the Serralves Foundation / Educational Service. This project currently involves the senior citizens of the Bom Pastor (Cruz Vermelha) Day Centre and teenagers and young people from the António Cândido Centre. It’s based on the assumption that interaction between different generations is a critical factor in achieving balance in the general education of young people and promoting an active, healthy and participatory aging process. The project is developed around a role play game that is located in an imaginary "here" and "now", where everyone behaves like 25 year old adults. In this context, they travel and build worlds tailored to their dreams and ideas, in plastic and dramatic expression, storytelling and creative writing activities. "Endless Travels", the unifying theme of the project’s third edition, reflects the idea that our life project doesn’t end with hermetically sealed steps, and instead continues and grows, flowing from the living, everyone’s endless travels, that are always built via processes of permanent renewal. This exhibition introduces participants to the most significant products and the records of the entire process. Location: Lagar THE PARK IN MACRO VISION During a visit to Serralves Park, we’re naturally confronted with the mastery and beauty of its landscape design, its historic value, diversity of colours, aromas, shapes and textures, and its fauna and its flora. However, there is much to admire beyond what we can naturally can observe with the naked eye - a hidden, mysterious and fascinating world waiting to be discovered, that only macro photography will allow us to appreciate. This technique is one aspect of photography that is intended to capture details of small objects or small living creatures, many of which are invisible to the naked eye. Integrated in the 25/15 commemorative programme of the 25th anniversary of the Serralves Foundation and the 15th anniversary of the Museum of Contemporary Art, the "The Park in Macro Vision" exhibition reveals, in an unprecedented and surprising way, the details and curiosities, the beauty and excellence of the art hidden in the natural values of the park, that would otherwise remain invisible. 2013-10-06
![]() Free admission Since 2009, this festival has renewed the annual invitation to celebrate the Autumn season and rekindle old traditions and customs, based on ancestral knowledge and practices linked to rural traditions, revived in the contemporary context of the Art and Landscape of Serralves. The theme is Autumn, the rhythm of the seasons, the harvests, the knowledge and the ancestral practices linked to the rural tradition, the biologic production of food, alternative diets, responsible consumption, as well as other issues related to environmental protection. The 5th edition of the Autumn Party offers a series of free activities for all ages. The activities are concentrated in the meadow and the farm - and the Maria Nordman garden is the ideal place to bring a traditional picnic basket and have a day-long picnic. A celebration of the arrival of Autumn - on a special day that should be enjoyed with the entire family at Serralves.
A musician born in Lisbon in 1982, Norberto Lobo has already established himself as one of the leading figures of Portuguese music in the early 21st century. His career to date has been charted outside specialized academic teaching. Norberto has developed his work by rich and independent learning, both at an individual and a communal and generous level, spanning a wide array of different musical styles. He has worked with artists such as München, Chullage or Lula Pena, and is also the co-founder of the Norman, Páscoa Collective and Tigrala projects. He has co-performed and toured with many international musicians, such as Lhasa Sela, Devendra Banhart, Larkin Grimm, Nana Vasconcelos and Rhys Chatham. He has performed regularly in Europe, including live performances at the famous Café Oto in London or at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in London, as well as successive tours in Scandinavia, where he has a dedicated fan base. He is a skilled player of several guitars, with particular emphasis over recent years on acoustics, electrical instruments, and more recently, the tanpura, which was the main instrument used in the Tigrala project, that was handmade and was a surprise gift from one of his fans in Denmark.
One of the fundamental causes of extinction of the wolf (Canis lupus) is the persecution of these animals at the hands of man. Few animals simultaneously inspire as much fear and respect as the wolf. But what do we really know about this animal and the manner in which it is seen by man? The Grupo Lobo (Wolf Group) will use this exhibition to provide an insight into the real wolf, trying to answer these questions, informing, raising awareness and alerting people to the problem of conservation of wolves, and simultaneously the need to understand the importance of biodiversity in general. Activities for children will also be organised, related to painting and writing, dedicated to the wolf. Photography: "Iberian Wolf" / Artur V. Oliveira, Grupo Lobo ORGANIC PRODUCTS FAIR The fair includes many proposals of tasty and healthy fresh produce, linked to a more conscious and healthy lifestyle, with a great variety of stalls, including the presence of Berdinho. AUTUMN PARTY FAIR The Serralves Shop will operate a stall in the Pátio da Nogueira, not only with gifts for children (educational games and Serralves merchandising goods, among others) but also with books in several categories with special Autumn discounts - up to 50%. "Wool Festival" of the Oficina de Feltro 12:30 Passeio da Levada Artists: Diana Regal and the Viana do Alentejo Female Choir Oficina do Feltro (the Felt worksho) is a project that has been implemented in Viana do Alentejo since 2007, aimed at reviving craftsmanship using local wool, especially based on textile production techniques such as felting, spinning and weaving. During the Wool Festival, fabric will be pressed under foot and felted, to the sound of songs from the Alentejo. A collective festival that also involves the Viana do Alentejo Female Choir. The wool that results from the shearing is used to recover and reinvent traditional ways of producing felt, as a collective practice, complemented by folk songs from the Alentejo. This process, which observes the ancient practices of producing threadless fabric, differs from most current ways of making felt, in particular through more immediate use of wool without requiring its transformation. 35 TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM Collected from oral tradition by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, more than 200 years ago, the stories now gathered in the audiobook, published by Boca, are presented for the first time in Serralves’ Autumn Party, with the participation of the storytellers, Maria Morais, Rodolfo Castro and Thomas Bakk.
From the book "Once upon a time there was a carpet and Noah's Ark”, written by Regina Guimarães and published by Colecção B – Oficina do Feltro, various stories will be told, including one that describes the production of a handmade felt carpet and another concerning the tale of Noah and his ark. CASTRO LABOREIRO DOG Classified as one of the oldest dog breeds in the Iberian Peninsula, this is a Portuguese breed that is well worth getting to know! Considered to be a rare breed, native to the village of Castro Laboreiro, in north-west Portugal, it was selected to protect livestock herds from attacks by wolves, which still abound in the region. Despite the dog’s large size, it is an excellent companion, establishing a strong connection with the whole family, and very gentle with children. It is an intelligent and healthy dog that does not require any special care, just needs regular exercise. The Castro Laboreiro Dog Club, founded in 1989 and recognized by the Portuguese Kennel Club, consists of owners, breeders and friends of this breed, whose primary mission is to preserve and make known this magnificent dog. The sheep of the Entre Douro e Minho Bordaleira breed is currently in decline. This breed, besides producing excellent quality meat, also generates manure that can be used to fertilize gardens and contributes to the cleaning and maintenance of farmland, allowing promotion of biodiversity and conservation of the typical landscapes of the Minho region. The presence of these sheep is organised in order to raise awareness of Portuguese genetic heritage and disseminate the work of the AMIBA Breeders Association, which in addition to defending this native sheep breed, represents the Barroso cattle breed and the four Portuguese chicken breeds. Alongside the exhibition of a flock of sheep, there will also be a sheep shearing demonstration and public information, provided by experts of the AMIBA Association. "The Women of Bucos" present the wool cycle from the sheep to the yarn In the Casa da Lã (Wool Museum) in Bucos – a Museum in Cabeceiras de Basto, wool is still hand processed by a group of women, from the sheep to the yarn, thus completing the wool cycle and transforming the wool fibres. The intention is to safeguard a valuable form of wisdom resulting from centuries of evolution and years of learning and improvement by those who still know how to practice this skill today. The wool used in the Wool Museum is mainly collected from local herds of the Bordaleira sheep from the Entre Douro and Minho region, the indigenous breed featured in this Autumn Party. Photography: Wool Cycle from the Sheep to the Yarn, Women of Bucos / Alice Bernardo "There's Life in Serralves!" is a documentary series that aims to present the Park’s natural heritage, including its richness in terms of biodiversity. The series was broadcast during the first half of 2013, by RTP Informação. Bats, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and butterflies are some of the animals that we visit in every episode, and we show that there is more life in the city besides human beings. The exhibition of the documentaries in the Autumn Party, will include the presence of the investigators of the CIBIO Biodiversity and Genetic Resources Research Centre, of the University of Porto, who participated in the production of the documentaries. BIRDS Episode (0:20:27) BATS Episode (0:19:23) INSECTS & BUTTERFLIES Episode (0:19:17) AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES Episode (00:18:29) Exploratory itineraries for all ages. Reborn, reinvent, recycle, rethink, recreate, complain, snore, sauté are some verbs that populate the narrative of this performance, which presents messages from the past, which are reviewed in the present, leaving ideas for the future. A joint creation of actors, musicians and writers, the underlying structure of MicroPhoenix’s miniature performances is based on an absurd delicacy, surrealistic vision and an unusual conception. Adam and Eve, The Upside Down School, The House in the Middle of the Road, The Mobile Phone which Fell in the Toilet, Money Under the Mattress, are some of the precious pearls that can be found in, around and above the Penelope Caravan. A collective work by Ana Bento, Fernando Giestas, Graeme Pulleyn, Sónia Barbosa Theatre Two characters akin to D. Quixote and Sancho Panza, a mixture of beggars and minstrels, travel through a country that resembles our own, a timeless country. ?In this adventure, we will be accompanied by two donkeys, the true masters of the journey. The four come to town in order to pay a visit in mock courtesy to the locals, bringing old stories and parables. Or maybe the stories are so topical that they disturb people. ARRE! A play for two donkeys and two actors is a theatrical exploration of a comical nature that crosses three starting points in a street performance: the Mirandese Donkey, an inquiry into the theatrical language of the Buffoon and the imaginary universe inspired by the work, "Don Quixote de la Mancha". The question of idiosyncrasy, as a form of resistance to the existing order (social, political, cultural, aesthetic and even moral) is the unifying point of this triad. Partner: AEPGA - Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys and Mules Photography: Claudia Costa Physical, visual, clownish and burlesque theatre "Victor, a second generation contractor! His work, his singular universe, was handed down to him by his grandfather. He sometimes dreams of Buenos Aires. One day, a stranger knocks on his door. He can’t manage to get rid of him. His name is Max. These two men don’t seem to be made for each other ... but ...Max is a migratory bird, and is able to adapt to any situation, always in a highly personal manner. This is a story that should be read like a comic strip. When words are almost superfluous, the image catches our attention. A contemporary, fun and touching story. Director: Tom Roos Victor Gama presents a Concert with a series of recent compositions for the Acrux, Toha and Dino – instruments of the Pangaea Instruments series – which he has created and developed over the past twenty years. Some of the works were presented in a highly publicised event at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 12, 2010 at the invitation of David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet. ?In his music, Victor Gama reveals a sonic palette built from percussive elements and string arpeggios, that close a circle between Indonesian gamelan music and contemporary composers, such as Francis Bebey, Steve Reich and Erik Satie. Playing the acoustic instruments that he himself has built, the Pangaea Instruments, which is also the name of the album released by Aphex Twin on Rephlex Records, has led him to perform on stages worldwide, wherein Gama explores the boundaries between traditional folk elements, electronic and improvised music. Biography Braima Galissa is a kora player and singer, who was born in Guinea-Bissau. He was born into a family of djidius - hereditary musicians – wherein Galissa is the name of one of the families that traditionally plays kora. He started learning to play this instrument when he was five years old, taught by his father Abudo Galissa, and also by his mother and maternal uncle - all of whom belong to this tradition of musicians. He has been living in Portugal since 1998, where he has continued to implement various cultural projects and has given concerts around the country. Internationally, he has performed in Spain, Brazil, S. Tomé, and the entire African west coast. He has participated in the records released by João Afonso, Amelia Muje and Herménio Meno (in the collection "" Mon mon in ""), Blasted Mechanism, Sara Tavares and with various Guinean artists.
Kora is an instrument associated to reciting stories, and in the Mandinga dialect means "the instrument that covers everything". Having realised the cultural significance of the kora, Braima Galissa has sought to preserve its symbolism. His traditional education spans around 15 years and involves singing, tuning, and construction of the instrument, training in African history, linguistics and international relations. Originally consisting of a gourd, metal, wood, leather and 21 gazelle-skin strings, the kora has evolved from various instruments, such as the tonkoron and bolonbata, since the mid-thirteenth century. Due to the European influence, the strings have often been replaced by nylon strings and the instrument’s harmonious sound resembles that of a harp. The main goal of this second edition of the Intergenerational Project - a partnership between the Municipality of Porto / Porto Social Foundation and the Educational Service of the Fundação de Serralves – is to create a crossroads between the past, present and future, creating links between generations. Like the previous edition, this project involved a group of teenagers from the António Cândido Centre and a group of senior citizens from the Santíssimo Sacramento Day Centre, complemented by another group from the Bom Pastor Day Centre - Portuguese Red Cross. In the spaces of the institutions involved, as well as in Serralves Park and the Museum, meetings, gatherings and workshops were organised in order to create ties of friendship and share life experiences, valuing imagination, stimulating capabilities and communicating through artistic expression and creative writing. This exhibition aims to present the work and share records from the entire process. The closing day of the exhibition: October 6, Sunday, Autumn Party: from 10:00 to 19:00 Visiting hours of the exhibition: 20 September to 5 October Mon-Fri: 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00 Sat & Sun: 10:00 to 18:00

AUTUMN FEAST 2012
2012-09-30
![]() Celebrate the arrival of Autumn at Serralves! Free entrance. We’ve prepared a special day for the whole family in which we aim to revive old Autumn habits and customs, based on ancestral knowledge and rural traditions, that will be revived in the contemporary context of the Art and Landscape of Serralves. The Meadow and the Farm will be the privileged stages for hosting the entertainment activities and the Maria Nordman Garden will be the ideal place for bringing a traditional picnic basket and enjoying a snack during the day. We invite you to take part in one of the many workshops on offer: some focus on discovery of the Park’s biodiversity, others are dedicated to the celebration of Autumn - including straw constructions, outdoor paintings and many other creative proposals. There will also be a donkey-library ("Burroteca") accompanied by a storyteller, an award-winning documentary by Tiago Pereira ("Eleven donkeys fall on an empty stomach"), musical performances with the groups, FRICS and Danças Ocultas, the stage play "QUASE NADA" (Almost Nothing) by the company, PELE, and dance and performance shows, including "The Ball” by the choreographer Aldara Bizarro and "Chapeau", a workshop/show involving sculpture-hats. Once again, this 4th edition will also include a biological products fair and a children's book fair. We’re counting on you! The access takes place through the gates of Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa and Rua Bartolomeu Velho 141. Consult the detailed programme and visit Serralves at the start of this new season. MUSIC
F.R.I.C.S. F.R.I.C.S. (Fanfarra Recreativa e Improvisada Colher de Sopa) brings together musicians from different areas, including free-jazz, psychedelic rock, Indian classical music, salsa, death metal and symphonic music. The project revolves around a core group of 10 musicians (woodwind and brass, strings, keyboards, percussion and synthesizers) and regularly presents performances. Guests performers include José Cid and Manel Cruz, and many others. The group has also collaborated on several occasions with the S. Bernardo Fanfare - one of Portugal's most prestigious fanfares. Start time: 13h45 (duration: 60 min) Location: Itinerary starting at Octógono DANÇAS OCULTAS The diatonic accordion (known as the ‘concertina' in Portugal) is an instrument that was invented in the first half of the 19th century, and was subsequently fine-tuned by several European instrument makers. Today it echoes memories from a different musical ambience: a time before the invention of the gramophone and the radio. But it continues to be a ‘dream machine' that is
able to invent possible futures and produce different meanings.
In May 1989, Artur Fernandes, Filipe Cal, Filipe Ricardo and Francisco Miguel decided to embark upon an ambitious project : to develop their musical skills as they studied the possibilities of transporting this instrument away from its traditional folklore roots, while accepting "the will of the concertina" and writing new music for it.
In October 2009, they released a new work : Tarab, an arabic word that means a state of elevation, celebration and spiritual communion, which is simultaneously attained by both the performer and the listener, during an accomplished musical act. Tarab is ecstasy. Tarab is the goal of music and of those who practice it. Tarab marks the refocusing of
the group, a dynamic reinterpretation of their common path and a new affirmation of music as a language of universal brotherhood. (Jorge P. Pires) Start time: 15:30 (duration: 60 min) Location: Prado (Meadow)

THEATRE/ DANCE/ PERFORMANCE
BURROTECA The BURROTECA is a mobile library in which the Donkey carries the books and serves as an active partner in the dissemination of culture. The Burroteca simultaneously aims to share books and the pleasure of reading, while creating the opportunity for close contact with the donkey, highlighting its affective qualities, especially with children, complemented by entertainment provided by the musician / actor and storyteller, Jorge Ribeiro, in partnership with AEPGA. QUASE NADA (ALMOST NOTHING) is a bilingual performance, in Portuguese and Portuguese Sign Language, inspired by the Poetic Works of Eugénio de Andrade. ALMOST NOTHING is an intimate lifecycle, of those who live with the rhythm of time, without fear of the curves. ALMOST NOTHING is just that ... A place of encounters and disencounters, marked by the seasons and the flavours of the fruits of the season. "It’s one thing to live inside our skin, another is to spend a night on uncharted seas" - Eugénio de Andrade (free translation of the portuguese sentence) Start time: 11:30 (duration: 60 min) Location: Prado (Meadow) THE BALL The participation-based dance performance, “The Ball”, choreographed by Aldara Bizarro, with original music by Artur Fernandes, was presented for the first time in the 2012 edition of Serralves em Festa. It is inspired by Ettore Scola’s film "The Ball” (Le bal, 1983) and by the memory of public dances organised in urban neighbourhoods, villages and towns of Portugal. On the basis of research into traditional public balls, dances and their various forms, an attempt has been made to recreate a contemporary ball, inspired by the ideas and perceptions of the participants and including three levels of involvement: professionals (dancers, musicians and the choreographer), the local communities that deliberately rehearsed for this purpose and the audience attending the show, which spontaneously ends up by becoming involved in the ball. “The Ball” tells the story of a town or neighbourhood. This ball is about Miragaia. Start time: 17:30 (duration: 75 min) Location: Prado (Meadow) CHAPEAU, BY VÉRONIQUE FOLLET
Véro offers the audience sculpture-hats – that are fun, light, multicoloured, large and small. Within minutes, the artist conjures up an exclusive and extravagant hat, thus bringing smiles of surprise and admiration to the entire audience. Recycled objects, accessories, dry leaves, small shrubs and flowers serve as the inspiration for these story hats, that are improvised and constructed with the complicity of the whole audience. A workshop / show: an unexpected surprise to be discovered and experienced. Start time: 11:00-13:00 and 15:00-17:00 Location: Next to Presa Support: Milaneza and Nacional
EXHIBITION: "I’M 25 YEARS OLD" – AN INTERGENERATIONAL PROJECT
“I’m 25 years old” is a project born from a partnership between Porto Municipal Council/Porto Social Foundation and the Serralves Foundation’s Educational Service involving a group of adolescents from the António Cândido Centre and a group of senior citizens from the retirement home, the Lar do Santíssimo Sacramento. The name of this intergenerational project, "I'm 25 years old" aims to bring together the groups involved - establishing a link between them all. Past and future are thus mingled together, engendering a conflict-free relationship, a sharing of mutual experiences, a healthy atmosphere during the meetings. The workspaces were provided by the two participating institutions and by Serralves. The activities emphasised debate, artistic expression and creative writing. The learning experiences ensued in an interesting manner. This exhibition shows the highlights from this 6-month experience. The project will continue and it seems to us that it has reached a key moment: the age differences between the participants are now viewed as an asset. Location: Lagar (Olive Press) Without prior booking, subject to the max. no. of participants at any time.

INDIGENOUS BREEDS IN THE AUTUMN FEAST
MARINHOA BREED During the Autumn Feast, there will be three specimens of Marinhoa cattle in the Ring – a bull, a cow and a calf – aimed at disseminating this breed and the work pursued by the Marinhoa Cattle Breeders Association (ACRM). This initiative aims to publicize the national genetic heritage and stress the importance of these indigenous animal species in the maintenance and sustainability of rural ecosystems. Mechanization of farm work, along with abandonment of subsistence agriculture, has contributed to the decrease in the number of animals from indigenous breeds. Most such breeds are now in risk of extinction and the Marinhoa breed is no exception. The breed is now classified as being highly endangered, since there are about 1300 females recorded in the breed registry and an average of 900 calves born each year. DONKEY LESSONS We invite families to discover what donkeys eat, how much water they drink, the special care required for their well-being, their life cycle and morphological characteristics, as well as how they behave in various everyday situations. Operating hours: 10:00-11:00, 11:30-12:30, 13:00-14:00, 14:30-15:30, 16:00-17:00, 17:30-18:30 Location: Passeio da Levada Max. no. of participants: to be determined at each moment in time, by the dynamic interaction between the public and the donkeys, and defined by the monitors conducting the lessons. Partnership: AEPGA - Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys is a non-profit association that was founded on May 9, 2001 and which aims to ensure the protection and promotion of Donkeys, in particular the indigenous breed of donkeys of the Terras de Miranda – the Mirandese Donkey. This association brings together breeders and admirers and contributes to genetic improvement and creation of a group of animals with similar characteristics, which currently survives in the Mirandese Plateau, representing Portugal’s first indigenous breed of donkeys.
